Chocolate huevo-menos cake

There were moments when she was pregnant with Belle, when I was alone in the House and everything was still out. Lying in the sofa hands cupped around my hard belly. Breathe it in and out as useful as possible. Waiting for me and try patience. And I was wondering who would be the small person.

Then with a punch, Belle would give a kick with all his strength to anything in its path with a stunning lack of rhythm. Then, she gorgotear and casually swim wash their hands on my belly in broad gestures.

DSC_0100
Four years later, he wished he had written down who was that person. I'm pretty sure what I thought was nothing like the most beautiful truth. It has a sense of finely sensitive design. You have stripes work well with hearts but not polka dots and roses do not all agree. She loves all dolly things - strollers, baby changing tables and bottles. But at the same time you can build a tower of media. Above all, it reminds me every day how important being observation and curiosity in the power of the human soul. It smells of everything from food to scarves. She wondered about the clouds, snow, sky and God.
DSC_0104
Every day is a research for her. Dessert is one of their particular specialties. Why is that some cakes aren't chocolate it? Why is that some cakes are deficient in frosting it? By which a single layer of cake?

Belle love of chocolate is something than expected body during pregnancy. Wasn't much of a person sweet until Belle resided within me. During my pregnancy, which fanaticize about the decadent chocolate cupcakes. Belle, is a woman who likes the idea of visiting his grandparents, in the magical land of Cincinnati, where cupcakes are great for breakfast.

This summer we have experienced with the perfect chocolate cake. While I have more experience, chocolate tasting, I think that Belle has a natural view. We are a perfect team. We tasted cakes. I spoke, perhaps idly, the requires a balance between sweetness and bitterness; moisture and density. However, Belle really summed it up, "has to be super chocolate and good".

DSC_0033

Our first attempt at this cake was one that was basically a big brownie. When topped with cocoa butter cream, Belle was very satisfied.

When birthday time arrived yesterday, I turned to this cake. Parenting is something that is more difficult when we pay attention to what you are doing. Probably should have only made the cake that she liked it, but instead I decided to increase the buttermilk so I would have a moister result of cake - how. After all, sometimes a mother has to make decisions for their children.

I also decided to use three meringues, because sometimes a mother comes to break the rules. First separated the two layers with Marshmallow Buttercream, adds a layer of breadcrumbs and then some with vanilla cream and then iced with cream cheese cacao-crema butter. The result was a cake that your dentist you call to make an appointment.

DSC_0040
How to cut the cake, I waited to hear his remarks. He sat his slice with almost religious fervor. She refrained from paper napkin so she can lick the icing of the fingers. He then asked seconds and third parties (even if both applications were denied). And then she played.

In the past four years, one of the few things I've learned about parenting is that it is often the silence of minutes, when socks are being raised or collection that kids share blocks. Today, when the House was quiet and beautiful and I were cleaning his room, she said, "there was much more icing on the cake." I am happy".

Recipe:
Chocolate cake:
Cream together:
4 ounces softened cream cheese
4 T softened butter
1 3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar

In a microwave, melt 1/4 cup chocolate chips (or more)

In the bowl of the mixer, add:
1 cup milk
1 T instant coffee granules
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon cider vinger
melted chocolate chips

In a bowl, combine:
1 3/4 cup flour
3/4 cup cocoa
1 1/2 t baking powder
1 1/2 t baking soda
1 teaspoon salt

Add dry ingredients to wet, at intervals of 1/2 cup, mixing as you go.

Baking trays 2-9 inches that have been oiled and floured (or cocoaed) to 350 for 25-30 minutes.

Meringues:
I have a little mystical / alchemistry - as with the meringues, so recipes here there... all I can say is that you for the cream cheese icing, I used 4 oz butter (soften), 4 oz of cheese (softened), splash of coffee, cream and then add sugar in powder and cocoa with wild abandon. The others were a little fuzzy.

Perspective.

I've been thinking a lot about this word. A second stop and really think about it. That the roll of the tongue. It tries to tell quickly that the "s" swallow it. Then it say it a little slower. Roll the "r" and then ramp up as the "s". Then there is that you spent the last minute not thinking anything else that sounds. He was putting into practice the concept of that Word. You found a moment where everything was in prospect.

DSC_0962

I can't say that it is something that I put into practice with a certain frequency. For most of the past two months, I almost lost a concept so noble as a perspective view. Work has consumed me, I eaten from inside and leaving me completely dissatisfied. In a poor response to the pressure, I have me wrapped in even more work waiting for the mountain of papers that somehow inure and protect my soul. Hopefully sometime that month, I realized that my soul does not need more protection than the prospect. That a day out, a night away from the work of the office, would mean nothing more than my own sanity. Or, that the day of the snow to make a small batch of cupcakes with your friends is much more cathartic and much more real than any work has to offer.

DSC_0943

But sometimes, when you are standing on the edge, you can find your heading. It's when you back, way back, when you see the wide possibilities forward, view the lines from the perspective of being so obvious. You can see your gift in your peripheral vision but to the front, small but nevertheless, their future reassuringly beacons you forward.

Vegan Waffles

Type = "html" >vegan waffles

Quiero que me gustan arepas, I do it. When she was pregnant with Belle, my husband would make plans for tomorrow Saturday morning pancake. In their world, we would be all work together to make pancakes, music playing softly in the background. Pope would go crazy. Belle and I sat down in anticipation of table in our voices. Then, we would be all Chair until large piles of pancakes, dipped in Maple syrup, Belle embraced in the lap of his father. With pancakes described this way, who wouldn't appreciate them.

If you don't have any offspring, you think that you can make plans; that you can predict who will be. You can not. Belle was intensely dislike pancakes.
J - I thought it was a case of tasting pancakes at least 10 times. He then thought that 15 times it might be necessary. Let's say that it is a couple of years and neither mother nor daughter have come to love the pancakes.

Although the girls of the family must be very susceptible to marketing. Take the flour mixture and milk, and put it into a waffle maker and well, we're sold. Sold, I say. If I decide to discuss this matter, I think it's because waffles are soft pancake-iness wrapped in crunchy happiness, gold. It is the crisp, plain and simple.

Slushie Shirley Temple or very cold Lady Vortex

As the only son, didn't have the benefit of comparison.  My behavior, my reactions, my nature could not be referenced against another incarnation of my parents.  And is my inexperience maybe that leads me on account of the many differences between Maybelle and Tigerlily.  Where one is cautious, the intrepid.  Where one is salted, the other sweet - both behavior and taste.

Today, that we were reading a new series of Anthony McCall Smith about precious Ramotswe Botswana.  When the father of precious remembers being confronted by a lion, I asked the girls what they would do to them had been in the shoes of Obed.?  Maybelle considered his actions, while Tigerlily shouted that he ate it.  Replied, "I think what a lion would eat."  Then, she replied, "use my weapon and then convert it into meat."  Maybelle remained silent, shrewdly reflecting on her course.  Finally he said, "is seeking refuge and BARRICADE in".  And there are, it is often an action, while the other is potential energy.

On other occasions, there are reactions are surprisingly similar.  We have all been in the throes of evil cold vortex that has made me think of Jack Frost as a charming kind and warm heart, less agoraphobics.  We are beginning to feel that the time is us condemned to house arrest. I have moved from mother to camp counselor, filling every moment with something, anything, that could prevent the mutiny.  After all, if I had to walk the plank of the band, you could freeze until I fell.

So, today, when NPR posted on experiments of cooling, we have to go.  A little ginger ale, grenadine, water of roses and of course, incredibly, inappropriately, ridiculously cold and you have a drink that devoured both of my girls with equal vigor.   The video at the end of the post of NPR for directions.

Whole sweet potato waffles

False seems to have become a real fact of life these days. You think about it. It is not that they are intended to be on facebook or twitter. In fact, on the internet, not be your true I can be an important point of sale (ruth bourdain anyone?). And, as food, certainly there are all colors and artificial flavors. But, even with the new movement "food of truth", it thinks in pictures. Many of these photos have been artificially lit style and pampering to less than one inch of its existence. For years, there have been accusations of psychologists that the plethora of models airbrushed, surgically enhanced in magazines and video games would make that young people can not appreciate the normal female body. I'm beginning to think that the power of photography of food affects it see how regular food.

Multigrain Waffles
Multigrain Waffles

These waffles come from its iron looking a bit like a tiled courtyard. Not the enough fact in Italy, doesn't care. More like that at the edge of the patio fell apart after enduring too many winters one cold. And, if they are not accustomed to whole grains, perhaps concerned by its mottled nature. And then there is the type of unfortunate orange of the mass. The vendor call me terracotta. In other words, are not the Queen of the dance of waffles; on the other hand, the wallflowers make waffles seems to Miss America. And then here is where my brain thinks conspiracy societal. I thought that in fact they are so ugly that I wonder if they taste good. What? Why? My brain somehow puts Visual data in front of smell when it came to food. Who heck cares what it seems? I guess that a food stylist / part of my brain lizard. Luckily my husband, who abstains from all kinds of food porn in principle, is immune to this stupidity. The entrenched and quickly testifies its exquisiteness.

Recipe:
Sweet potato of whole grain waffles
In a blender combine:
250 grams of boiled sweet potato
1 serum
2 eggs
2 heaping T oil

Cook 100 g cereals bob hot red mill plus 3 seeds of chia T with almonds 1 cup milk. Cool and add moisture. Mix.

In a large bowl combine:
145 g of whole wheat flour
Brown 40 g flour
15 g flax seeds
10 g oat bran
60 g corn flour
1 T yeast
1 t baking soda
1 t salt
2 t brown sugar
White sugar 2 T

Add the wet to the cold. Mix effusively. Let stand covered in refrigerator overnight. Bring to room temperature. Add 1/2-1 cup more whey of milk (or almond milk) If you wish to create a mass of similar consistency. Cook at a Waffle Baker in the Middle for about 5-7 minutes. These take more in cooking that we have done other waffles. Our hits when you think they are. So we went through three regular cycles.

Paper advent calendar

Type = "html" >Bauhaus Advent Calendar in the run-up to Thanksgiving, that had my mind on many things, most of them not food. I certainly ate.  And they did eat.  And they did eat.  But I found my mind fight against the tensions, pressures and other banalities.  Finally, my mind began to look at lunch bags.

We have had a number of lunch boxes around.  On Halloween, we had shot us a rotten crazy party that many a mouth within a ten mile radius.  In order to encourage guests to take the sugar House and away from our own children, we had an activity where the children can decorate lino-impreso handmade bags.  It was these leftover white bags that sang to me.

Cooking always has been a joy for me; they enrich me its inherent creativity and its relationship of coexistence.  However, the scene of food blogging, its competence and its referent, were difficult. I always felt that I was in high school.  However, in the midst of radio silence, it was certainly cooking.  But instead of trying to find new combinations and frankly win followers invisible, unknown worship, I went back to the regulars.  I was only cooking for me and my family.  And then I also let my many interests live unnoticed.

Doing things, in whatever form that takes, it continues to enrich myself at home.  He continued to write and photograph.  But, I've been doing it for myself. And this reminds me of the moment, where it stood at the door of the pantry, as if it has a presentiment of a conquest.  The bags were sitting on the shelf.  Lets face it.  They were asking for it.

A couple of hours, a pair of scissors and a little bondage, and voila, a bag of paper advent calendar.  The emergence of spare began a whirlwhind of more decisions of Advent.  Felt and mason jars were mistreated, to be sure.  The children certainly can now count up to 24.  If they are doing anything other than a day from a portion of the month of December, it could be a problem.  But, Hey, why you put too much pressure on young people?

Roller calotypes

Type = "html" >Roller Callotype
All parents is very pleased by the success of their children.  I, certainly, I am very proud that since last year that I have, not one, but two readers. That said, his reading has caused me some problems.

Roller CallotypeEach season of advent, my daughters and I give chocolates to pass 24 nights trying things that interest us.
Last year, I found the Member only know for read and write our small circle of manufacturing, so I was able to make all the decisions without impunity. This year the girls have the added ability of being able to make sense of what was gobbletygook only under those beautiful photos on Pinterest.  Research will equals problems.

We made a list. I bought some supplies.  And we have to climb.  Or, more accurately, try to make bouncy balls at home, attempts to make a snowball that no leak, and that rather could be called genocide sedum terrariums. In the end, come to an important conclusion: the internet lies.  Lies.  All lies.

The challenge of House art compared with my work to make art with students is that you often try things for the first time with their children.  In the classroom, always prior attempts to your project.  There is nothing more horrible sitting in a room with 35 students from the school when you don't quite know if its paper-making project is going to work. Rather than experience anarchy or shame, you always pre test your project.

At home, basically you need to develop night and parents during the day (and have something special to hold that pace) to try the project before doing it with your children.  So, on the other hand, you and your children to be fearless explores in the jungle of the internet how-to-verse.  With this in mind, we have begun testing things and evaluate the success of these small projects.

Roller CallotypeOur first experiment was with roller callotypes.  I've seen people us sticky things / foam on rollers.  But I'm not willing to give up a rolling pin.  We were in search of other things that can be rolled.  We considered rolls of cardboard and lint roller.  But, in the end, we went with water bottles.  There definitely benefiting.  They are a great size for small hands.  And, if they are trying to get a uniform pattern, you can see through the bottle for his columns in a row.  The challenge with water bottles is that they are light, so it is necessary to apply pressure to make an impression even.

And, if you want to see this test in action...

Prêt pour Pâques, partie 2

I went to Trader Joes and got most of my Easter candy there. They had cups of butter of peanut milk and dark chocolate (but without the artificial stuff in the brand name), as well as delicious belly rabbits. I bought a few other kinds of chocolates and I think I'm all set with more than enough sugar to spend the holidays. If you missed my previous post of Easter, I really like the Surf Sweet Jelly beans. I usually bring them to my health food store and I think they're a little better than Trader Joes'.

I also made the trip because we had another birthday party. I picked up a package of mini cupcakes chocolate with butter icing cream to take with me. This is what my daughter ate while the other girls had pink frosted cake and fruit punch.

I bought an Egg decorating kit (to another bank) where you can melt the little sleeve around the egg. If I get my false Indigo to take off in the Garden this year, maybe next year I'll have a few interesting to play with natural colors. Decided that I spend too much time getting my garden will work on the colours of the natural egg this year.

Happy Spring!

questions about the caramel color

I've had some recent questions about caramel color, so I thought that I have gathered some things I've found on this.

Caramel color is considered to be natural, but some experts now say that it may still have health risks. Here is the list of unnatural dye-based natural verses.
http://en.Wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_coloring

Here is a recent article that describes some of these concerns on caramel color:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/Michael-f-Jacobson/caramel-coloring-in-soda-_b_823639.html

My experience is, well, strange to say the least. You could see my previous posts on anger and food dyes, tantrums and food dyes, or even bipolar children and food dyes. We were a family free of dye for almost 4 years now. We also do steps usually allow our kids to drink soda, so my recent experimentation is limited. We used to allow free soda's caffeine like root beer or lemon lime ones on special occasions. Usually I noticed that my two youngest got more and more hyperactive. I attributed that to the sodium benzoate so they get only rarely any soda at all. However, at least three rare occasions that I have allowed my more old to have the root beer, my generally easy going, cooperative and calm the children were asleep a terrible time. He kept thinking he was seeing or hearing things. It was just 'edgy', which rise upwards and upset without real reason. After the third or fourth time, we assigned to the root beer. No more root beer, no more problem. REALLY. We let it slip a few times more, (denial about the effects of food on the behavior is normal) and finally decided together (my son and I agreed) root beer does weird things to his thought. Avoid it, and we are very well. I should also mention here that my daughter also has trouble staying asleep if she has any of these food colours.

Now remember, I'm also a mental health professional. I am aware of that can mean these symptoms. It is extremely rare to have these symptoms just pop in and then disappear. But then again, this is what is happening with the other reactions of dye food that we lived, so I'm pretty confident that something in the root beer is doing this to my son. It is so good on this subject now, I just to brag of his responsible and mature response. When offered root beer at a party, he will say just it makes him mad so he does not drink it. His friends know that he has some weird food restrictions, they are used to it so that they accept and move. We have not had the same response from the clear sodas. With more sleep overs and the parties, it was permissible to have these and it is not a problem. I also like the new Sierra Mist natural. Finally something more that we had as children. Oddly enough, my son had Cola a few times (Papa wimpped and could not say no) but it doesn't seem to cause a problem.

While I'm on the subject, I can mention as well as we also try to avoid all artificial sweeteners. I have seen a trend in my professional work with children. Well meaning families who consume lot of Splenda (hoping to be healthier and avoid sugar) seem to have more than their share of aggitated children. Just an observation on that one, no research to back it up, but I think the general rule applies. A little sugar is OK in moderation, fake stuff stuff and chemical gets you one way or another. If your children do not sleep, once more, check the food and get rid of fake stuff. You might be surprised how much your kids can be when they eat real food, healthy.

dye free candy

I made another exciting discovery yesterday. Wonka has dye free candy: sour gummies and regular gummies. I was at Ohio University for a training and found it at the check out line in the cafeteria. My friend, another dye free advocate, was surprised we had never tried it. She said she sees it everywhere, especially gas stations. I guess I stopped looking at candy racks under the assumption there was nothing we could have. This was yet another pleasant surprise: regular candy, in a regular check out, at a regular candy price. I attached a link to their site so you can see what the packaging looks like. http://www.wonka.com/home.aspx/kazoozleandgummies However, only a few products are natural. Most of their other products still have dyes. If they could only get a dye free laffy taffy my son would be in heaven...maybe some day. When I looked more closely at the site, it appears Nestle owns Wonka. Nestle has been changing many of their products, going more natural. They even took the artificial flavor out of their chocolate chips. With that in mind, chocolate chips would be another idea for things to put in Easter eggs. So, Thanks Nestle! We'll be buying your natural products.

FDA hearings on food dye: no action, but need more research

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
Here are links to a few articles I found on the recent FDA hearings. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/01/health/policy/01fda.html?_r=1 http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2011/03/31/more-research-needed-on-food-dyes-fda-panel-says/ I have to admit I'm disappointed about the FDA's lack of response to food dyes, but can't say I'm all that surprised. Food manufacturers do not want to change to more expensive food ingredients. They don't want the cost and hassle of warning labels. The price of food is jumping enough without a change in ingredients. Thus, a huge percentage of the American public remains clueless to the potential affects of food dye on children's behavior. However, I'm also disappointed that the articles seem to focus on ADHD symptoms. Sure we've seen some outrageous hyperactive and impulsive behavioral responses to food dyes in my family. It was the main reason I started the whole ban. However, the reason I've kept my family dye free for over 3 1/2 years was the combination of behaviors: irritability, tantrums, aggression, sleep disturbance, negative thinking, etc. This is what I think research should address. I could live with a kid who was a little bouncy and hyperactive. It's the angry, yelling, defiant personality change that I decided was intolerable. I wish I could show families how much calmer and healthier all 3 of my kids have stayed consistently for the past 3 years off dyes, and how badly things break down in the rare instances that petrochemicals creep into the diet. So on that front, I agree with the FDA. RESEARCH IT MORE. But I certainly hope they do more than run a simple study only looking at hyperactivity. My experience has been that food dyes affect way more than that. I don't need research to know what my own in-house, 3 person case study has shown. Life is better when you eat real food. As we continue to use buying power, more and more natural options will be available.
